We recently adopted a seven-month-old Border Colliepup. Duece loves playing withother dogs; Laika our seven-year-old female enjoys the company of dogs but doesnot really play with dogs. Whats’more, when Deuce is having fun withsome of his buddies, Laika our Kelpie mix, true to her breed, controls Deuce’splay by blocking his movement and overall fun. BTW, it is instinctual forherding breeds to stop the motion of the sheep (or any other herding animalthey are working with) so this natural behavior in herding dogs, translates tothem also controlling the moving motion of fellow dogs, bicycles, cars etc.

Now back to the tip of the month. I decided that besides the difference in age and interest inplay between my two dogs, I also missed having one-on-one time with Laika whohas been with me for six years as our only dog. So I now schedule Fridays asour Mother & Daughter day! On Fridays Deuce goes to doggieday care for a couple of hrs. and Laika and I get to take leisurely walks, orwork on some specific trainingthat I have delineated for her.

Another great benefit of looking at each one of my dogs asan individual and acknowledging their specific needs is that Laika -- an olderfemale does not want an exuberant pup pestering her to play with him can havesome quite alone time.

I urge you toconsider treating your dogs as individuals! Think about their ages, what theylike to do and what they excel in. Lastly, allow yourself the gift of having a one-on-one relationship witheach one of your dogs. After allyou chose them because each one of them is unique and adds to the quality ofyour life!

NOTE: Dogs need tointeract with novel and friendly dogs on a regular basis in order for them tokeep their social skills polished. Besides Deuce going to daycare once a week, I make sure that he (andLaika) interact with other mutual pals on a regular basis. When dogs livetogether, they tend to get used to each other’s communication style and antics– (just like us humans who on occasion reads our partner’s mind)In order for dogs to develop excellent social skills it is important that theyget to co-mingle with a variety of dogs and not only with the dog (s) that theyshare a home with.

December Tip Of The Month: Do Dogs Get Cabin Fever?

Are you and your dog suffering from cabin fever? I look out the window and there is snowhere and there. Sure, the sun is shinning but it still feels cold. Ido take my dogs Laika and Deuce for an “obligatory” walk every day. Perhaps we go out a little later duringthe day so that it is not in the teens but in the 30’s :0).

What about you? Do you walk with your dog (s) regardless of the cold? I have had a few training sessions thatwas cancelled because it was potentially too cold for the dogs (and the humanstoo). This got me thinking: how does one assess if indeed it is toocold for the dogs to be out there learning something new?

Each dog is different of course: Some cannot wait to get out the front door for a newadventure but others… might run away from the leash and your intentions ofgoing out.

Consider a few things in order to determine if it is toocold for you and your dog to venture into the cold:

1. The age of your dog,

2. The size and the coat.

3. Finally observer your dog for any indication of notwanting to go outside and if so, I suggest you

honor his silent request.

I also would like to suggest that you think of laying in bedwith a good book and warm as a way of spending quality time with your pal. Okay, sure, most likely your dog WILLbeg for some form of mental stimulation and entertainment. So here are someideas of simple things you can do with your pup in the comfort of your home.

Practice Recall(come when called)

Arm yourself with your dog’s breakfast or dinner and go fromroom to room calling your dog’s name enthusiastically.

Once your dog gets to you, click and reward with a piece ofkibble

Run to the new destination and repeat!

If you have more than one dog you can still practice theabove but in addition make sure you keep it safe by teaching your dogs to waitfor their turn.

Say their name followed by a simple behavior- Deuce gets tosit while I ask Laika for a play bow.

Engage Your Dog on His Natural Behaviors

Give your pup something that they can tear apart anddissect. Dissecting is indeed anatural doggie activity. It ispart of the kill sequence that our dogs used to engage in before they where servedtheir meals in colored ceramic bowls or fun dispensing toys (my choice- alwaysmy choice).

NOTE: If you giveyour dog something to tear apart, be attentive so that your dog does not eatsmall pieces of paper. Once thefun activity is done with remove all traces of paper from reach.

Cardio One-Two-Three:

Create a safe “agility” course that includes having your dogcrawl under a chair, leap unto a sofa or bed. Perhaps you might try having your dog step backwards fromthe floor to the sofa so that they practice their propioception skills while usingtheir hind legs and core. Pleaseremember that this is suppose to be a fun

Activity for your dog! Do NOT force your dog into doing something that he appears concernedabout. Instead build up hisconfidence slowly… make everysmall step towards a specific goal a confidence building experience.

Practice off-leash heeling by walking around your livingroom with your dog at your side.

Practice sit and wait at every single door in your home andif your dog is able to finish the round with the same exercise at the frontdoor.

Reward, reward for quite calm behavior!

The Problem With Humans

So where did the month of November go? I launched my Tip Of The Month last October and here we are Nov. 25th and I have not yet posted the tip of the month for November! Okay, blame it on getting a new puppy or in the midst of buying a new house but the truth is that beyond all the chores and demands in life what lies under my lack of posting is the fact that as humans it is really hard for us to be consistent. This goes for keeping a diet, following up with New Year’s resolution or… writing a post. Our very human nature can also bite us in the butt when it comes to training our pets. In order for our animals to learn with the least amount of stress we MUST be consistent. True, all learning experience- regardless of species involves stress and also true that not all stress is “bad” for you.

When we are consistent in our training: i.e.: we use the same verbal and/or hand cue for a given behavior, we follow with consequences for our pets behavior EVERY time and not only when it is convenient for us or not too much trouble. Our animals will enjoy working with us and learning. Also as important, what they are learning will become permanent since they can truly focus on the new task at hand instead of an inconsistent hand gesture for example.

What’s more, if we strive to be as consistent as humanly possible, our pets will thrive because their environment and relationship ARE predictable and that is good news for them!

Tellington TTouch® is a method of working with animals that has proven effective in reducing stress, fear, aggression and anxiety; as well as modify behavior, increase flexibility and—when combined with veterinarian care—aid in recovery. The approach is gentle yet systematic and helps animals to better cope with different and novel situations. It improves confidence, focus and learning.

With the use of gentle touches, body wraps andgroundwork (a variety of exercises with equipment) we engage and calm the animal's nervous system as well as teach the animal to move in non-habitual ways. Since an animal that is stressed or anxious cannot learn, the incorporation of TTouch® becomes an initial first step to any learning. Your dog will learn how to focus and better cope with situations in which he/she reacts with fear, concern or anxiety.

Fee: $75 per dog (multiple family members are welcome to attend)

Space limited to six dogs

Requirements:

Dogs must be crate trained OR be able to remain comfortably behind an “x pen” for periods of time during the workshop

Dogs must be comfortable (no lunging, barking) while working in the proximity of other dogs on a leash and people.

Each dog must have a handler, but multiple family members are welcome to attend.

What to bring everyday to the Workshop:

A six-foot long leash (no flexi leashes please), flat collar, harness or head collar. No prong collars or pinch collars. If your dog has a flat collar but you normally walk him with a harness or head collar please bring both to the workshop.

A bed or mat for your dog

One 4” ACE bandage (NOT the self-adhesive)

A frozen (with food inside) KONG of the appropriate size for your dog

News Blast! I think living with your dog should be really fun and almost seamless... with that idea in mind, I will be posting on this blog a simple yet effective training tip of the month! For the month of October I was inspired by a quote sent to me by my sis. As I read it I thought: yes, life can be enjoyable, simple and always better in the company of a dog!

“To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in eden,

where doing nothing was not boring- it was peaceful” - Milan Kundera

October’s Training Tip:

When you are out with your dog for a stroll, take the time to stop here and there so that you can both take in the view, sounds and whatever else is going on around you. Ask your dog to sit or to lay down. If your dog gets up, ask him gently to go back to sitting or laying down. Once you are ready to carry on, invite him to join you. The advantage of taking a break in the middle of an activity- be it the flight of birds or passer-bye is that your dog will learn to relax even in the midst of distractions.

Hello All
I just got a link from a friend about a giraffe giving birth... pretty sweet and amazing. I found this other video of an elephant giving birth (very similar strategies to the ones used by the giraffe)
What amazed me the most is how easy (natural) the birth was.

For us humans it is not such a natural or easy affair... I wonder, is it a nature vs culture thing?

On a more serious note: Some people still think that it is impossible to get reliable, complex behaviors without using force when training dogs... eat your heart out!

All the dogs in the video where trained using reward based methods and a clicker.

Notice not only the varied complex behaviors the dogs are performing but also how "cooperative" (confident) and relaxed- they are overall.

I did catch a few yawns ... (mild sign of stress) perhaps the video camera or the lights?

We need your help. As you may know Senator Peter Wirth has introduced SB11 (Dogs in Certain Restaurant Areas). The bill has made it through committees and now is on the Senate floor waiting for a vote. It appears to be under threat from Senator Stuart Ingle. Senator Ingle represents Portales, Roswell, Clovis and Fort Sumner.

The reason for the bill is that there is current law on the books for the state of NM that does NOT allow dogs on outdoor dining areas. Albuquerque is the only city in NM that has its own Health Dept. and they do allow dogs on patios. There is widespread support from restaurant owners as well as from the NM Restaurant Association as it is an economic issue for them. It would be up to each individual restaurant with outdoor dining areas as to whether they want to allow dogs or not.

Off-leash La Tierra Trails No More?

Perhaps you are aware that they are plans in the making to decide the usage of the trails at la Tierra (off highway 599- Las Campanas area).

There are two more Public Meeting with the project designers. One of them is TONIGHT, January, 11 from 5:30-7:30 at the SF Community Convention Center, Milagro room 201 West Marcy St.

I am very concern, that with the new development, we might NOT be able to walk our dogs off lead. As it is, it is difficult to find appropriate place where to exercise our dogs off lead.

I urge you to make some time to attend the meetings (see link below for information and contact number) or at least call so you can be in the email list and give feedback that way.

Help safeguard this off-leash area! Speak up for your dog now!
Otherwise, it might be too late once the public face of the project is closed.

Puppy-hood is a period of intense learning.  What a dog learns at this stage could very well determine the dog’s future behavior and overall confidence. The TTouch Puppy is an ideal class prior

3 Day- Introductory Workshop to the Tellington TTouch® Method

With the use of gentle touches, body wraps and groundwork (a variety of exercises with equipment) we engage and calm the animal's nervous system as well as teach the animal to move in non-habitual ways. Since an animal that is stressed or anxious cannot learn, the incorporation of TTouch® becomes an initial first step to any learning. Your dog will learn how to focus and better cope with situations in which he/she reacts with fear, concern or anxiety.

This workshop is ideal for guardians/owners who want to learn the basics of the TTouch® method by working with their own dog on a particular issue. During the workshop we will be working with TTouches, wraps and groundwork.
Fee: $75 per dog (multiple family members are welcome to attend)

Requirements:
Dogs must be crate trained OR be able to remain comfortably behind an “x pen” for periods of time during the workshop
Dogs must be comfortable (no lunging, barking) while working in the proximity of other dogs on a leash and people.

As Washington State University neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp, explains in Affective Neuroscience: The Foundations of Human and Animal Emotions, “Seeking is the granddaddy of the systems. It is the mammalian motivational engine that each day gets us out of the bed, or den, or hole to venture forth into the world”.

He also states that the seeking system is incompatible with fear. Ahh! What he means is that if an animal is experiencing fear the animal is NOT involved in seeking behavior.

Moreover, if an animal is taught and encourage to seek by engaging in its natural behaviors. In the case of dogs: searching for food, dissecting (you do not have to give your dog a carcass to dissect. He/she would be happy dissecting a wrapper in order to extract a delicious treat), playing and other social interactions as well as learning new things in a safe manner your dog’s fearful responses will be replaced by more joyful seeking behaviors. The goal here of course, is for the seeking activities to be enjoyable and engaging for your pet. If they are not, by definition they are not seeking behaviors.

The video illustrates an easy way by which you can engage your dog in some “adventurous” rewarding behavior. Notice the different “techniques” Laika uses to get the package open. Her level of interest in the chore and when she gets frustrated and gives up. The clip is left unedited so that you have a sense of how long this exercise will engage your dog.

For best results, follow these guidelines:

Think of activities that your dog likes to engage in. This may vary by breed. For example: Terriers like to dig while Labradors love holding objects (such as a ball) in their mouth. Of course, besides breed differences there are individual difference.
Initially do NOT make the chore very difficult for your dog. You want her/him to get interested and stimulated by the activity but not discouraged.
If your dog appears to loose interest in the activity, try and make it a bit easier for him/her. For example: Laika quit at some point because she could not open the wrapper that contained the treat. I decided to help out a bit by opening the bag just a tiny bit, and with the smell of the treat now more noticeable, she was enticed to continue working on the project.
As your dog’s level of confidence increases, make things harder for him/her. Observe and you will learn what is the right amount of challenge for that particular “game”.

I do not recommend leaving your dog unattended while he is engaged in dissecting because you want to make sure he does not eat the wrapper, fabric etc. These activities should always be supervised. Alternatively, you can give your dog a Kong when he will be left alone.

Other ideas….

Teach your dog how to eat out of plastic container (once of course he has learned how to open the lid to reach the food). Extra points: hide the container somewhere easy at first and have your dog find the food and then work for her meal.

Freeze a previously soaked piece of clothing in chicken broth etc. and give to your dog to chew and enjoy. Again, supervision here is mandatory!! We do not want the dog eating the cloth! He is just dissecting it (tearing it apart and making a mess in the process).

Can Your Dog Learn From Halloween?

The answer is YES!

As Darwin himself mentioned: It is not the fittest that survive, but those who learn to adapt to new environments!

It is a fact that dogs do not feel safe with new stimuli.

However, you can help your dog become more confident by doing the following:

When taking a walk give your dog a very tasty treat every time your dog sees a funny (or scary -- booooo) Halloween motive.
Is that simple! Just make sure that your dog sees the scary/Halloween motive first. Then you treat!
Make sure your dog is at a comfortable distance from the novel stimulus
Learn to observe his body language. The more comfortable he feels, the more relaxed his overall demeanor.
NEVER force your dog to meet someone that scares him or approach something that scares him.
If he is afraid, he is not learning.
Instead, take it slow and follow the guidelines above.

Why does this work so well?

Because dogs learn among other ways, by association.

So if you pair a scary/unusual stimulus with something wonderful for your dog, he will begin to look forward to the scary thing.

Of course, emotions do not change overnight, so depending on the level of concern or fear of your dog how long this will take.

Be patient and give your dog the benefit of the doubt.

If You Think You Are The Only One Stressed About Your Move, Think Again...

Moving can be very stressful for our pets. However with a little pre-planning and consideration of your furry family member needs you can help him (and yourself) make the transition a cinch.

Here are a few tips to help you and your pup with the transition:

Prior to Moving In:

If at all possible, take your dog to your new house prior to the big moving day. Let him explore the new home. However, do not let him explore alone to avoid any accidents.
Deliver some delicious treats while inside or play his favorite game.
Take walks in your new neighborhood prior to moving in.

Moving Day:

Have a dog walker take your dog for an outing and delivered the tired pup at the new place. Alternatively, have a friend keep your dog with them and pick him up at the end of the day.
Regardless of your prior sleeping arrangements for your dog, allow your dog to sleep with you in your bedroom until you can observe that your dog is relaxed and his normal all self.

First Couple of Days to Couple of Weeks:

Keep his routine as intact as possible: Use the same bed, crate,

and schedules. Dogs thrive on structure and routine.

Do NOT assume that your dog knows where you want him to do his business. Even if your dog is housetrained, you must teach them where you want him to eliminated. Take him outside regularly depending on his age to avoid ANY accidents. Once outside give him a treat immediately after he has eliminated in the area you have selected for him.
If accidents occur Do NOT punish your dog. See it as a mistake in your management, clean it up and re-direct your dog to the desired location.
Spent some quite and play time with your dog regardless of how hectic things are.
Decide before moving in, the best place for your dog to have some “away from the action” time and place his favorite bed there.
Keep him busy with an appropriate chew toy.
Consider your dog’s mobility issues and age requirements. For example, if your prior home had no stairs but your new home does, make sure your dog can use them safely and without pain.
Play it safe! While unpacking, make sure your dog has no access to medications, household products such as snail bait etc.
Avoid leaving your dog in the backyard until you have made absolutely sure he cannot escape.
If any of your neighbors has a dog and there is the possibility of the dogs fence fighting, bite the bullet and make arrangements to have the dogs meet preferably off leash in a neutral area.
Keep in mind, that even confident dogs can be afraid of new sounds or sights. Do not assume that he is being difficult or stubborn by not wanting to go outside on his own when dark for example. He might just need time getting used to his new surroundings.
If after a few weeks your dog does not appear to be at ease or is developing behavioral issues, contact a REWARD –based dog trainer who can give you additional management tips or training advise.

Waking Up The Nervous System & Tools to Cope With Stress

Here is an idea for a doggie challenge: Have your dog walk on different (yet safe!) and novel surfaces.
Dogs receive much information via their pads. When they are exposed to a novel stimulus it is new information for their brain.

The goal is to have your dog experience something novel in order to expand their capacity for flexibility in dealing with everyday stressors. When an animal is equipped with more confidence and experiences to encounter life's daily challenges they thrive!

Please keep in mind that your dog MUST engage with this new experience in a positive (non scary) way. Do NOT push your dog to walk over a new surface if there is any hesitation on the dog's part (observe the dog's body language). He should have a loose relaxed body, open mouth and with his body weight leaning towards the surface -- and not away from it.
If there is any hesitation, take note of this and try again on another day.

Reward (we are talking hungry dog & tasty treat here) your dog for ANY exploration of the new surface.
Do NOT lure your dog to walk on the surface. Instead reward his voluntary exploration.

Focus on the experience for the two of you and not on the goal!
As your dog's confidence level grows, he will feel ready to push forward
Continue to build trust in your dog by making sure he feels safe.

Are You Conflicted? Your Dog Will Be Too!

I just had an experience in which I was asked to help one of my colleagues. As the training session evolved, It was clear to me that my colleague did not have a definite plan on how I was suppose to help her. In short: I was left in limbo! I remember feeling frustrated and paralyzed, not knowing what to do next -- if anything.

This unpleasant experience made me think of dogs (any animal for that matter) that are not given clear direction (or worse) when they are given conflicted information about how we expect them to react in a given situation. Moreover, when the situation is one that produces fear or anxiety clear and consistent information as to how we want the animal to proceed is crucial!

Having a plan of action in place will most definitively point you in the right direction of your goal, be appreciated by your colleagues and in the case of your dog it will make a big difference in the outcome of what he learns and his wellbeing.

Deadly Mushrooms - Alert
The Amanita phalloides, the death cap mushroom, has come out in full force since the rains started (this email originated in Calif, but the mushroom is also seen in OR). We had one death at Lake 2 weekends ago, and PETS emergency clinic in Berkeley called on Friday and said they have had 3 deaths in 6 days - all from the Oakland area.

The mushrooms have a sweet odor (like honey) and are attractive to some dogs (whose owners report they actually seek them out to eat them). They are really non-descriptive little white mushrooms.

The toxic effects appear about 6-36 hours after the mushrooms are eaten, and once signs are seen the toxicity is poorly responsive to treatment (we try a lot of things to support the animal, but if enough mushrooms were eaten it will be fatal despite the treatment).

If someone suspects their dog may have eaten a mushroom, the best treatment is to take the dog immediately to a vet or emergency clinic and have them induce vomiting and give activated charcoal. The mushroom toxin is absorbed fairly rapidly, but the damage to the liver can take hours before it is clinically apparent. Don't waste time trying to figure out if the mushroom is toxic as speed in removing the mushroom from the digestive system is the most important thing in my experience.

In North America, Death Cap poisonings have been reported from California, Oregon, and New York.
